Rather than superficially changing what we don’t like in us to something that feels better for a while, HeartsEase looks for, and at, what is there already and the gifts it holds for us before moving towards healing and wellbeing, whatever that may mean for us.
HeartsEase explores ways in which we can take the personal responsibility for our responses to our issues, conditions and life situations, with kindness and care-full attention. This is Life You Choose in its essence: learning how we can move from passively receiving to actively partaking in whatever life situation we find ourselves in. The discussion amongst therapists and healers about personal responsibility and blame has been one of interest for many years. Responsibility in HeartsEase is regarded as the ability to respond.
Buddha said “What we think, we become.” Based on latest research in beliefs and biology, HeartsEase looks at the relationship between cell growth (or cell retardation), our beliefs and the well documented “Stress Response” (Hugh Selye and many others since), sometimes known as fight/flight response. HeartsEase pays particular attention to the so-called “freeze state” of this response – a physiological and emotional state provoking chronic issues and illness. Cellular biology and other fields of research now clearly show how our beliefs, thoughts, and behaviours condition the body to habitually produce chemicals and hormones that are either nourishing or harmful. We become addicted to the states those chemicals provoke in us eg; happiness, depression, aggression, kindness.
HeartsEase offers ways of learning to move towards a state of resourcefulness; learning to attend to the messages symptoms have to tell; what part they play, or can play, in a life of intention and purpose and making choices which align us with our intentions We look at how valuable a sense of meaning in our lives is to our health and ability to “re-Source” ourselves, other people, the world our planet with its myriad of creatures, plants and wisdoms.
Research in brain function gives us now a completely new way of understanding how brain, mind and body work as one wonderful complicity of influence. The major finding that focussed and attentive learning patterns brings about physiological changes not just in the brain itself but also in the functioning of the entire nervous system, and thereby the body – opens a vast opportunity of possibility in all areas of physical and emotional health. HeartsEase teaches the skills required for such attentive focus to affect the physical/emotional body and that which we perceive to be outside of us. In doing so we learn that the stories we tell of our “reality” can change thereby changing our perception of what reality might be for us.
HeartsEase explores the neurological and physiological effects of a body in or out of balance and the strategies employed by each of these body states. Using mindful awareness HeartsEase begins to recognise how mind activity affects body activity and vice versa and how to begin to acknowledge our own part in maintaining our issues.
Three things (at least) are required to begin the work of HeartsEase:
-
Warmth: the love and acceptance of oneself required to move towards change
-
Willpower: the strength of mind required to do the work
-
Waiting: the patience, caring and persistence required to allow change and healing to take place.
HeartsEase brings together Being and Doing; neither one without the other is truly effective for well being. In some Asian languages the word for “Mind” and “Heart” is the same. When we live “as if”, life gradually and gently begins to matter, just because it does. Mother Teresa wisely and simply said, “We can do no great thing. We can do many small things with great love.”
The work can help you begin to learn it is possible to change your behaviour, thoughts and state: there will be various homework to do after the sessions: you will be confronted with you. It is not a magic formula – I do not have a magic wand, and neither do you but it seems to be true that if you want to stay the same, then do the same; if you want change, you have to do something different. HeartsEase examines various perceptions of change and some of the skills required to adapt to continual change which is part of life itself.
Many people try various therapies, techniques and trainings with the hope that they will “cure” them, rather like buying a book of French grammar will suddenly magically transport them into being able to speak like a native – I used to think that the more books on learning Spanish I bought, the more fluent I would get – I didn’t have to read them, just having them on the bookshelves would be enough for me to wake up one morning speaking fluent Spanish! Needless to say, it didn’t happen – I had to do something.
